Understanding hydroponic nutrients

Hydroponic nutrients are specially formulated to give plants everything they need in water — the main nutrients (nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium) plus essential micronutrients. They usually come as liquids or powders you mix into water.

Mix to the right strength

Follow the product instructions for how much to add. Too weak and plants starve; too strong can “burn” the roots. Many growers use a TDS/EC meter to measure nutrient strength — but following the label carefully works well for beginners.

Why pH is critical

pH measures how acidic or alkaline the water is. If the pH is wrong, plants can’t absorb nutrients even when they’re present in the water — leading to deficiencies despite a full reservoir. This trips up many beginners.

Change the solution periodically

Over time, the nutrient balance gets used up unevenly. Every couple of weeks (or as recommended), replace the solution with a fresh mix to keep plants well fed.

Use clean, suitable water

Very hard or chlorinated water can affect your solution. Many growers use filtered water, or let tap water sit a while, for best results.
