How to Set Up a Hydroponic System at Home
Easier than you think
Setting up a home hydroponic system is simpler than most people expect — especially with a ready-made kit. Follow these steps to get growing soil-free.
Step 1: Choose your system
Beginners do best with a simple system — a Kratky (no-pump) jar or a small Deep Water Culture (DWC) or NFT kit. Pick one suited to your space and what you want to grow.
Step 2: Pick a spot with light
Plants need plenty of light. Place your system on a sunny balcony or windowsill, or use a grow light if your space is dim. Good light is essential for healthy growth.
Step 3: Set up the growing medium
Place your seedlings or sprouted seeds into net cups with a growing medium like clay pebbles or cocopeat. This holds the plant while the roots reach the nutrient water.
Step 4: Mix the nutrient solution
Fill the reservoir with water and add hydroponic nutrients as directed. Plants get all their food from this solution, so getting the mix right matters (more on nutrients and pH in our other guides).
Step 5: Check the pump and water level
For pumped systems (DWC/NFT), make sure the pump circulates or aerates the water properly, and keep the water level topped up. For Kratky systems, no pump is needed.
Step 6: Monitor and top up
Check the water level and nutrient strength regularly, topping up as plants drink it. Watch your plants and adjust light and nutrients as they grow.
Step 7: Harvest and enjoy
In a few weeks, you’ll be harvesting fresh, home-grown greens and herbs — no soil, no mess. Keep the system clean between crops for the best results.
